Former FGCU men’s basketball coach and current Kansas assistant Joe Dooley was arrested on Saturday, Dec. 20, on suspicion of driving under the influence, and will be suspended for three weeks, Jayhawks coach Bill Self announced.
“Joe exercised poor judgement and will be suspended for three weeks, effective immediately,” Self said in a statement. “Joe is remorseful, apologetic and accepts the consequences of his actions.”
According to the Lawrence Journal-World, Dooley, 60, was arrested at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday on the suspicion of driving under the influence, failure to stop at an accident with injury or damage over $1,000, and transporting an open container. He was released on a low-level bond early Sunday morning.
Dooley coached the Eagles for five seasons from 2013-18, where he led the Eagles to three Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season championships, including their first title in 2014, and two second-place finishes. He also helped them capture two conference tournament trophies and earn NCAA Tournament appearances in 2016 and 2017 and beat Fairleigh Dickinson in the 2016 First Four.
Dooley, who was ECU’s head coach from 1995 to 1999, returned to coach the Pirates for the 2018-19 season and coached four seasons before being fired in March 2022.
This is Dooley’s second stint with Kansas as he worked for Self from 2003-2013 before leaving to take the FGCU job. He returned to Kansas in the summer of 2022 as the director of student-athlete development and is now listed as an assistant coach.
