Florida restaurant known for smashburger, malted milshake has closed

Island Burger & Shake on Fort Pierce South Beach permanently closed in April because the owner wanted to scale back after his second major health scare in six years, he told TCPalm April 21.

Taylor Shull announced the closing of his island-casual restaurant, known for its smashburgers and malted milkshakes, in an April 12 Instagram post. He said his medical treatment for throat cancer was brutal.

“After a lot of thought, I made the difficult but necessary decision to reduce my workload and focus on just two restaurants,” he said in the post.

Shull still owns Hutchinson Island Bar & Grille at the Fort Pierce south jetty and Island Pig & Fish in Tradition.

He initially opened Island Pig & Fish in the Harbour Cay plaza on Seaway Drive in Fort Pierce, but moved it to Tradition in Port St. Lucie earlier this year. LocOhana Tropical Grill will open soon in that Fort Pierce location.

Erin’s Irish Pub will move into the Island Burger & Shake space, which will be the Sebastian Irish pub’s second location. Erin’s is at 740 S. Fleming St., where J.J. Mannings Irish pub was.
