A car matching the vehicle involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a 55-year-old woman injured earlier this month has been located by by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver at the time of the crash, however, has not yet been named. No arrests have been made in the case.
Investigator said the gold 2004 Honda, with front end and side damage, was found at an unnamed location. The vehicle was involved in a July 12 crash on Arabella Lane in Barclay Drive in Port St. John.
The Honda “has been taken into evidence. (The Florida Highway Patrol) is still gathering further evidence to confirm who was driving V1 at the time of collision,” said Lt. Tara Crescenzi, spokesperson for the highway patrol, in a statement released Monday, July 21.
Investigators will pore over the car to determine how fast the car was going and whether brakes were applied before the driver pulled away from the scene. The vehicle was captured on surveillance camera in the area at the time of the crash.
The pedestrian sustained non-life-threatening injuries sustained after being hit while walking along a roadway a short time before sunrise. The woman was walking along Arabella when she was struck by the Honda.
Troopers report that nearly 25% of the crashes the agency investigates involve hit and runs. In recent years, state legislators have ramped up the criminal penalties for hit-and-run drivers.
Anyone convicted for leaving the scene of a crash with injuries could face up to five years in state prison along with a $5,000 and a revoked driver’s license for at least three years.
