The case began in 2024 when the Sheriff’s Office received a report of an inappropriate relationship between a middle school athletic director and a student, according to the release. Detectives and school officials started an investigation that spanned multiple states and resulted in federal criminal charges.

The student said she had been in a year-long relationship with Johnson, who was serving as a middle school’s athletic director, according to the release. After school district officials learned about the allegations, they removed Johnson from campus and terminated her employment.

Detectives served a search warrant on Johnson’s home, prompting her to leave the state and go to Kansas City, Missouri, according to the release. They determined criminal acts occurred across multiple states during travel with the girls basketball team.

The FBI joined detectives to find and arrest Johnson in Kansas City on federal charges of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
