First Friday Night Lights of Sumrall era feels like a turning point

Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose. Friday Night Lights is back in Gainesville.

While the premier summer recruiting camp never truly left Florida, the event has lost some of the luster established in the Urban Meyer years — back when that opening line was actually relevant, and the hit NBC show was at its peak.

Blue-chip recruit attendance decreased over the years, particularly during the Dan Mullen and Billy Napier eras. Jon Sumrall’s staff has hit the ground running on the recruiting trail, however, and last Friday’s event featured one of the most stacked lineups in recent memory.

Friday Night Lights represents a changing of the guard, of sorts. The focus begins to shift toward the 2028 class, while still getting the 2027s on campus. The impressive thing about the current class is their competitiveness and willingness to participate. In the past, the top guys haven’t always worked out at the camp.

It starts with the four-star commits. Offensive tackle Elijah Hutcheson(No. 97), quarterback Davin Davidson (No. 109), wide receiver Tramond Collins (No. 113), interior lineman Peyton Hiller (No. 124) and linebacker Jo’Bios Smith (No. 167) were all on hand. Several three-star commits also worked out and impressed attendees — defensive linemen De’Voun Kendrick and Stive-Bentley Yondui and safety Kamarion Johnson, to name a few.

Note: All rankings are pulled from the 247Sports composite.

Sumrall and Co. had several top-100 recruits from the 2028 class there, too. Defensive lineman Tyzon Swann (No. 5), edge defender Antonio Thomas Jr. (No. 15), quarterback Kingston Preyear (No. 44), offensive tackle Samuel Bailey (No. 46), receivers Tromon Isaac Jr. (No. 87) and Tyree Mannings Jr. (No. 101), and cornerback Izayah Vickers (No. 100) all participated.

It’s not just star power and talent that are impressive. Sumrall and his staff managed to get blue-chip guys on campus at nearly every position. This is the kind of event that helps build Florida’s reputation as the place to be. A couple of 2029s who attended the event are sure to spread the word, and things build year after year.

Attendance doesn’t guarantee signatures in December, but Friday Night Lights is clearly no longer just another stop on the calendar. The camp is full of heart. Sumrall is known to be an intense guy, and he hates to lose. It just feels like a different era of Gators football.
