Fernandina history teacher finalist for Florida teacher of the year

A Nassau County history and government teacher is one of five finalists for Florida’s statewide teacher of the year recognition, the Florida Education Foundation said May 19.

Sarah Twardy teaches at Fernandina Beach High School, where the 92% pass rate on the U.S. history end-of-course exam is the school’s highest on record, reported the foundation, a support organization for the Florida Department of Education created by the Florida Legislature.

When she was named Nassau County’s teacher of the year in January, the school district praised her “meaningful, inquiry-based instruction that emphasizes civic responsibility and critical thinking.”

Twardy, who has worked in education for 19 years, also mentors student teachers and gives guidance to colleagues, the state foundation reported.

The finalists for the 2027 Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year title were chosen from roughly 170,000 teachers across the state.

The winner will be announced in July.
