Florida A&M University is gearing up to hold its annual Harambee Festival Feb. 28 as the celebration of Black history continues.
But with a change of scenery this year, the ninth annual festival will be held at the Will Packer Amphitheater on FAMU’s campus, which comes after it has traditionally been held at Tallahassee’s Cascades Park. The Saturday event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. is free and open to the public.
During the culture-filled day of celebration and unity – expected to attract as many as 6,000 people – entertainment will include live performances by saxophonist Bernard “BK” Jackson and six-time Grammy-nominated violinist Ashanti Floyd, cultural performances and community engagement activities. The festival will also feature workshops and giveaways as well as local vendors selling food, art, fashion and cultural goods.
“The Harambee Festival plays a vital role in our relationship with the Tallahassee community and surrounding areas by enhancing our brand through community engagement,” FAMU’s Harambee Festival Project Manager Vernon Bryant said in a prepared statement. “It also allows us to showcase our colleges and schools and highlight the programs the university has to offer.”
Where to park
Attendees will be able to park in any of the parking lot spaces of FAMU’s Bragg Stadium before making their way to the Harambee Festival at the Will Packer Amphitheater, 1675 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
But for shuttle pickup, individuals will need to park on the west side of Bragg Stadium. The pickup schedule begins at 11 a.m., and shuttles will run every 30 minutes throughout the duration of the festival.
