The life of former Florida A&M University interim President Castell Vaughn Bryant will be celebrated on the campus where she made history as the first woman to serve in her role at the helm of the HBCU.
A funeral service in Bryant’s honor will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 21, in the Lee Hall auditorium on FAMU’s campus.
The arrangements come after the FAMU alumna died on May 2 at the age of 88 in Jacksonville due to undisclosed health issues. She was the first woman in FAMU history to take on the interim president role at the university.
Besides the funeral on FAMU’s campus, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated − of which Bryant was a member − will also hold a service at 6 p.m. May 20 at J.P. Moore Mortuary & Cremation Services in Tallahassee, the funeral home assisting Bryant’s family.
She will be laid to rest in her hometown of Jasper − about an hour and a half east of Tallahassee − immediately following the May 21 funeral program at FAMU.
Bryant graduated from FAMU with a bachelor’s degree in library science and a master’s degree in adult education. She also earned a doctoral degree in adult education from Nova Southeastern University and completed her post doctorate studies at Harvard University’s Management Development Program.
While Bryant’s career included being an elementary school teacher, working in various positions at FAMU and serving as president of three Miami Dade College campuses, she came out of retirement to become interim president of FAMU from 2005 to 2007. She was also interim president of Florida Memorial University during two separate terms in 1989 and 2017.
