Florida A&M continues to search for stability in its athletics director role.
FAMU announced the appointment of Michael Smith to serve as the interim Director of Athletics, effective Monday, Oct. 6. He takes over the role from Travis Glasgow.
Glasgow resigned from FAMU’s athletics department to become the Deputy Athletic Director at Alabama A&M.
Smith has served three times previously as the interim athletics director (2013-14; 2022-23; 2024).
FAMU has had eight full-time athletics directors since 2007.
It has been a difficult four months for the Rattlers’ athletics program.
FAMU football was scheduled to play against Mississippi Valley State in the Georgia Football Classic in Atlanta, Saturday, Oct. 4. However, the game fell apart publicly days before kickoff and has been rescheduled for Nov. 29, at Mississippi Valley’s Rice-Totten Stadium in Itta Bena.
The Rattlers’ athletics program and business operations have been under the direction of Glasgow and Brittney Johnson since June, when FAMU Vice President and Athletics Director Angela Suggs was arrested in Tallahassee on fraud and theft charges dating back to her prior job. She has been on paid leave since the arrest.
Glasgow was the university’s deputy director of athletics & chief operating officer. Johnson, meanwhile, is deputy director of athletics and chief integrity officer.
Suggs learned last month she may avoid trial on multiple felony criminal charges that were associated with gambling in some instances.
The State Attorney’s office has agreed to close the case and offer a deferred prosecution agreement, according to a Thursday, Sept. 25, court filing obtained by the Democrat.
The decision has allowed Suggs to enroll in a pretrial intervention program. She may also not serve in any position that allows her access to employer funds or a line of credit for personal use or benefit.
It’s uncertain if the decision prohibit Suggs, 55, from returning as FAMU’s athletic director under new President Marva Johnson, who assumed the presidency on Aug. 1, 2025.
Glasgow previously worked at FAMU and Kennesaw State under Milton Overton, who was FAMU’s athletic director from 2015-2017 before hired in the same role at Kennesaw State.
