Encouraging Miami Dolphins contract news: De'Von Achane, Jordyn Brooks

PHOENIX ― Miami Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan revealed the team will build around running back De’Von Achane, linebacker Jordyn Brooks and center Aaron Brewer.

In a conversation with a a small group of South Florida reporters at the NFL annual meetings, Sullivan sounded optimistic about striking a deal with all of them, perhaps even in the near future.

Achane, 24, is a star with one year left on his rookie deal. And Miami wants to extend him.

“Achane, is a very, very, very important piece of what we’re gonna do moving forward,” Sullivan said. “He’s a building block for us. It is a priority for us to get a deal done with him in the coming weeks, months. Nobody’s untouchable in this business. I don’t believe in that because you never know who’s on the other side of the phone and what they’re gonna offer. But there is zero effort on my end to move a chain. I’m very excited about him, the future of the Dolphins. He’s a difference maker for us, and I see him being here and having a lot of success.”

Does Sullivan want the Achane deal as soon as possible, with other backs up for extensions?

“Anytime you’re extending a player, you’d like to get ahead of the market,” Sullivan said. “That’s fairly common sense, but Achane is Achane. Those guys are those guys. Every deal is different. Every player is different. There are different factors that go into every deal. We’re excited about moving forward with Achane, getting him done, and having him be a huge part of what we’re doing.”

Sullivan conceded he has received calls about the linebacker, Brooks, who is 28.

“I got a couple calls, now the teams. I’ll keep to myself,” Sullivan said. “But Jordan, I want to be part of this. He’s a very good player. He’s made of the right kind of stuff. He’s going to be a pillar on the defensive side of the ball for us as we build this out.”

Brewer, 28, is one of the top centers in the NFL and is also due for a new contract.

“With him, we’ve talked,” Sullivan said. “He understands where we’re going. We’re not there yet, but we’re… coming down the road of that. Those are going to be the three kind of pillars that we build around – Achane, Brew, Brooks. They understand where they are, what we’re trying to get done. There’s an order that we’re going to handle the business in, but they know where they are and how important they are to us.”
