Downtown Sarasota streets closed for Veterans Day parade. Expect delays

It’s one of the coldest mornings Sarasota has seen all year, with temperatures hovering around 39 degrees at 8:30 and a silvery-blue sky hanging low over downtown as the city readies for its annual Veterans Day celebration.

Wisps of clouds drift across the bay, the sunlight soft and thin, casting a frosty glow on the streets below. In just a few hours, Sarasota’s Veterans Day parade and ceremony honoring local veterans will fill downtown, closing streets and adjusting city and county schedules.

The annual Veterans Day parade, hosted by the City of Sarasota and the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee, will begin at 10 a.m. today, Nov. 11, at Main Street and Orange Avenue. The procession will travel west and end at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue, where a ceremony will take place around 11 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend.

Road closures and tow-away zones have already started. From 3 a.m. to 1 p.m., Main Street will be closed from Links Avenue to Bayfront Drive, and Osprey Avenue will be closed at the same time from Ringling Boulevard to Second Street.

The Bay Runner trolley will operate normal hours, 7 a.m.–10 p.m., but will detour between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. during the parade.
