Miami Dolphins veteran cornerback Artie Burns left the team’s first training camp practice on crutches, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the initial fear is that it’s a torn ACL although the team is waiting for the results of an MRI to confirm.
Burns, 30, signed with the Dolphins as a free agent earlier this year after spending the last three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
The Dolphins can ill afford to lose players at the cornerback position after parting with starters Kendall Fuller and Jalen Ramsey in the offseason. While the team remains in active talks with free agents, including former Buffalo Bills starter Rasul Douglas, the team is currently set to have many young, inexperienced players compete for snaps at corner.
Burns, a 2016 first-round pick, is one of very few players with NFL experience. With fourth-year player Kader Kohou expected to maintain his role as the Dolphins’ slot corner, the options to start on the outside include Storm Duck, 2023 second-round pick Cam Smith, and 2025 fifth-rounder Jason Marshall Jr.
In three seasons with the Seahawks, Burns appeared in 21 games and started one. Earlier in his career, he spent four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he started 32 games.
