A film featuring Palm Beach resident Lawrence “Larry” Herbert, the inventor of the Pantone Matching System for colors, will make its area debut this weekend with special screenings.
“The King of Color,” a documentary directed by Patrick Creadon, will screen at 6 p.m. March 20 at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach as part of its Friday Art After Dark series. The film will then open theatrically March 21 at CMX Cinemas Downtown at The Gardens in Palm Beach Gardens.
Herbert, 97, is expected to attend the screening at the Norton, 1450 S. Dixie Highway.
The documentary traces Herbert’s life from his upbringing in Depression-era Brooklyn to his career in the print and manufacturing industry, where he developed a standardized system for identifying and reproducing color, according to a release from the film’s distributor, Los Angeles-based Picturehouse.
The Pantone Matching System created a universal language for color that transformed industries ranging from design and fashion to marketing and manufacturing.
The film premiered at AFI Fest and received the Lumière Award for best documentary. It previously screened in New York and Los Angeles before arriving in Palm Beach County.
“The King of Color” also features an exclusive interview with Herbert, offering an inside look at the ideas behind Pantone and his lasting influence on how color is understood and used today.
The March 20 screening at the Norton Museum is open to the public with museum admission. Tickets for the March 21 opening at CMX Cinemas Downtown at The Gardens can be purchased online at Fandango.com. The movie theater is at 11701 Lake Victoria Gardens Ave, Suite 1201.
