Deltona parents arrested for alleged abuse of child, deputies say

The Deltona parents of a child were arrested for abuse and neglect when the 6-year-old girl showed up at school April 16 with visible bruises on her face, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Jeffrey Morales, 29, was charged with child abuse. Melissa Husk, 35, was charged with child neglect for being aware of the abuse and choosing to hide it rather than intervene or report it to anyone, the sheriff’s office said.

Morales and Husk were being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail Feb. 17 each without bail.

According to the social media announcement made on April 17, deputies who responded to investigate the injuries on the child determined that she was physically abused by Morales and Husk. Deputies said the parents tried to cover up the mistreatment by keeping the child out of school for two days.

While talking to deputies, the 6-year-old victim drew a picture for Sgt. Brittany Crofutt that she’ll be keeping in her patrol car, the Facebook post said.
