It’s not unusual to see families enjoying pool time in Florida, or to see photos of the same.
But there’s something particularly sweet and determined about the faces of Westin Casey, 2, and his dad, Widly, in this Photo of the Week, taken at the Palm Bay Aquatic Center during the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on Thursday, June 25.
The event, an annual global drowning prevention effort focused on teaching children to swim, happens locally through a partnership between the center, the Palm Bay Recreation Department, the Palm Bay Fire Department, Health First First Flight and other agencies.
FLORIDA TODAY Senior Photographer Malcolm Denemar has captured the fun and informative action of the WLSL before, and likes the chance to see families bonding through learning more about water safety along with the basics of swimming.
Seeing people of all ages going all out to share safety tips and family time, he said, is heartwarming.
“The Palm Bay Aquatic Center goes all out,” he said.
“There was a drowning rescue demonstration with CPR, andmore. But the best photos are the parents in the pool with their kids teaching them pool safety.”
P.S. Westin, by the way, mastered underwater swimming to the wall of the pool.
