The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to provide depth and leadership during training camp. But while the team insists the move was strictly about stability, Bridgewater’s presence has naturally raised questions: could he push Kyle Trask for the backup job behind Baker Mayfield?
Bridgewater, 32, brings a wealth of experience, including 65 career starts across multiple teams. He’s respected throughout the league as a reliable backup and a calming presence in the quarterback room. With rookie Michael Pratt sidelined due to a back injury and Mayfield limited by a minor hand issue, the Bucs needed someone who could step in and run the offense cleanly.
Bridgewater has done just that in his first few practices.
Meanwhile, Kyle Trask continues to hold the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, a role he’s had since being drafted in the second round of the 2021 draft. While he’s shown improvement in his command of the offense, his performances during camp have been up and down. He’s struggled at times with pressure and has been inconsistent in red zone drills.
General manager Jason Licht, however, was quick to temper that speculation. “Kyle is still our No. 2,” Licht told reporters. “We brought Teddy in to help with depth and leadership. He’s here to support, not replace.”
That public vote of confidence is significant, especially considering the Bucs used a second-round pick on Trask in 2021. But the presence of a seasoned pro like Bridgewater adds pressure. If Trask falters in preseason games and Bridgewater continues to perform, the coaching staff could be forced to reevaluate. For now, Trask remains in the driver’s seat.
