Port St. Lucie’s long-awaited Costco store could open in 2027, city officials were told July 13.
Costco still needs to close on purchase of the property, at the southeast corner of Village and Marshall parkways. Land clearing and other work could take 10-12 months to complete, Brad Wester, a planner representing Costco, told the City Council July 13.
The council March 9 unanimously approved selling 22.8 acres in its Southern Grove industrial area to Costco Wholesale for $6 million. The retail store would be across the street from where Costco recently opened the first phase of a 1.8-million square-foot distribution depot.
Florida Costco coming to Port St. Lucie
The council July 13 approved rezoning to allow the roughly 160,000 square-foot warehouse store, including a tire center and outdoor storage. The change also allows Costco to increase the height of outdoor lights from the allowed 25 feet to 40 feet. The lights would be turned off when the store is not open, Wester said.
Vehicles waiting at Costco’s gas station would not be backed up onto the street, Wester said. Such traffic congestion regularly happens at the Palm Beach Gardens location prior to hurricanes and tropical storms, said council member Jolien Caraballo, who raised the traffic concern. All traffic and parking would be accommodated on the Costco property, Wester said.
Costco members receive deals on food and gas
Costco opened its 156,438-square-foot Stuart store April 25.
Shoppers need a paid Costco membership in order to get cashback deals, member-only prices and discounts on purchases such as travel, vehicles, home improvements and health insurance.
The Costco food court is lauded as an integral part of the Costco shopping experience. One of its most popular deals is the $1.50 hot dog-and-soda combo, which has famously been priced the same since the 1980s.
