Desmond Watson came into the NFL with the label of being the biggest player in the history of the league. While he hopes to be more than just that, it seems he has more work to do before he can start the next chapter of his football life where he can do that.
The Buccaneers opened training camp by announcing injury designations for several players, including Watson. The former Florida Gator is listed under the non-football illness list, and it was projected that this was due to the team’s efforts to get his weight under control. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media on Wednesday when camp opened, and he gave further explanation of the status of the Bucs’ defensive tackle.
Bowles told the media, “It’s just about trying to get him better, to be a healthier player and getting him on the field. That’s where I’m at right now.”
The team clearly has an idea of what they want to do with Watson. They used him plenty during rookie minicamps and OTAs, with mild success that had folks around the team excited to see him during training camp.
Until he can get healthy, though, he will remain a what-if on the roster until he can get on the field.
