The Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren’t signaling a need at tight end, but recent comments from general manager Jason Licht make it clear the position is very much in play depending on how the draft unfolds.
Licht pointed to the depth of this year’s tight end class, which gives Tampa Bay flexibility rather than forcing urgency. When a position group has multiple viable options, it allows a team to stay patient and let value come to them instead of reaching early to fill a role.
At the same time, he hinted at what would make a pick make sense. The Buccaneers aren’t just looking to add another body; they would be looking for someone who brings something different to the room, particularly as a pass-catching threat. That detail matters when you look at how the offense is evolving and the type of versatility they may want to build around.
Tampa Bay is comfortable with its current group, but that doesn’t mean the position is off the table. It means the bar for adding a new name to the room is specific.
If the right player with a unique skill set is available, the Buccaneers have already done the work to make that decision. If not, they’re in a position to move on without forcing it, which is exactly how this front office prefers to operate.
