Benjamin Morrison returned to practice Wednesday, giving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ cornerback an important opportunity to get back into the mix after missing a significant portion of training camp. Morrison’s return comes at an interesting point in the competition for playing time.
While he has the talent to compete for a starting role, the time he has missed has given several other defensive backs valuable repetitions and a chance to make their own cases.
Morrison entered the offseason as one of the more intriguing young players in Tampa Bay’s secondary. After being selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the former Notre Dame standout was expected to have an opportunity to compete for meaningful snaps right away. However, injuries have limited his time on the field.
While Morrison was sidelined, players such as Keionte Scott, Ayden Garnes, and Damarion Williams have taken advantage of their opportunities. Garnes has recorded an interception while working with the first-team defense, while Williams recently intercepted Jets quarterback Geno Smith during joint practice. Morrison’s return doesn’t necessarily mean his opportunity to compete for a starting position is gone.
There is still time for him to work his way back into the rotation, and his previous experience and ability could help him make up ground quickly.
At the same time, the competition may look different than it did when training camp began. The players who have received additional opportunities while Morrison was out have given the coaching staff more options to consider. If they continue performing well, Morrison will have to earn his way back into the conversation rather than simply returning to his previous position on the depth chart.
For Tampa Bay, having multiple young cornerbacks competing for playing time is a positive situation. The team needs reliable depth at the position, and Morrison’s return only adds another option to the group. Now, Morrison’s focus will be on getting comfortable again, staying healthy, and making the most of the remaining practices and preseason opportunities. Whether that is enough to earn a starting role remains to be seen, but his return gives him the chance.
