Brevard scored millions in state funding. Here’s what it means

When people ask what happens during the legislative session, they often think only about the bills that become law. While passing meaningful legislation is one of our most important responsibilities, another critical part of serving our communities is fighting for local appropriations that bring state tax dollars back home to improve the lives of the people we represent.

I am proud that this year’s Florida budget includes several significant investments for Brevard County that will strengthen our community, improve public safety, protect our environment, and support some of our most vulnerable citizens.

One of the appropriations I am most proud to secure is $300,000 for the Brevard Achievement Center. For more than 65 years, the Brevard Achievement Center has been transforming lives by providing employment opportunities, vocational training, and life skills for individuals with disabilities. Their mission is centered on helping people achieve greater independence, dignity, and purpose while supporting families throughout our community.

Organizations like the Brevard Achievement Center remind us that government can make a meaningful difference when we invest in programs with a proven record of success. This funding will help continue their outstanding work and expand opportunities for individuals who deserve every chance to succeed.

Public safety is another core responsibility of government. That is why I was pleased to secure $437,500 for the Indian Harbour Beach Fire Station Annex Project. Our firefighters and first responders answer the call every hour of every day, often putting themselves in harm’s way to protect our families, businesses, and visitors. This project is especially important because the city’s existing fire station is 59 years old and no longer adequately meets the needs of a growing community or the demands placed on today’s emergency responders. Investing in modern facilities is a wise use of taxpayer dollars that will improve emergency response capabilities, enhance firefighter safety, and ensure our first responders have the resources they need to protect our community for decades to come.

The state budget also includes $1.6 million for Phase II of the Rockledge Wastewater Treatment Plant Nutrient Uptake Project. While wastewater infrastructure rarely receives much public attention, it is one of the most important investments we can make for the future of Brevard County.

This project will improve water quality, reduce nutrient pollution entering our waterways, support responsible growth, and help protect the Indian River Lagoon — one of our community’s greatest natural resources. Maintaining and upgrading critical infrastructure today helps avoid much larger costs tomorrow while preserving the environment for future generations.

Another accomplishment I am particularly proud of involves my initiative to expand access to blood pressure monitoring. Although HB 781 did not ultimately pass as standalone legislation, funding for the program was successfully included in the state budget.

High blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer” because many people do not know they have it until they experience a heart attack, stroke, or other serious health complication. Expanding access to blood pressure monitoring can save lives through early detection while reducing long-term healthcare costs. This investment demonstrates that sometimes the most effective healthcare policy focuses on prevention rather than treatment.

These appropriations complement the legislative accomplishments from my first full session in the Florida House. I was honored to have two bills signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. One streamlines the trust discharge process, saving Florida families significant time and legal expenses following the loss of a loved one. The other creates a new pathway for Florida high school students to earn an insurance customer representative credential while learning personal finance, helping prepare young people for rewarding careers and addressing workforce shortages in Florida’s insurance industry.

As a small business owner, I understand that taxpayers expect results. Every dollar appropriated should provide a clear public benefit and be invested responsibly. I approached this budget with that same philosophy, focusing on projects that improve quality of life, strengthen our infrastructure, promote public safety, and deliver measurable value to Brevard County.

None of these successes happen alone. I want to thank my colleagues in the Florida Legislature who supported these appropriations throughout the budget process. Most importantly, I want to express my sincere appreciation to Governor Ron DeSantis for recognizing the value of these investments and keeping each of these Brevard County projects in the final budget. His commitment to fiscal responsibility while supporting worthwhile local priorities allows communities like ours to continue growing and thriving.

It is an incredible honor to serve the people of House District 32 and Brevard County. I remain committed to working hard every day to deliver conservative leadership, responsible budgeting, and real results for the families, businesses, and communities we call home.
