Region 2-2A final: No. 1 Holy Trinity 75, No. 2 John Caroll Catholic 38
MELBOURNE — Holy Trinity advanced to the Class 2A state semifinals for the second straight year after defeating John Carroll Catholic in the Region 2-2A final.
The first quarter was closely played with the two teams trading baskets throughout the quarter. The score was tied 11-11 at the end of the opening quarter.
Leila Bryant made a 3-pointer on Holy Trinity’s first possession of the second quarter to break the tie and put the team ahead. The Tigers went on to outscore the Rams 25-8 in the second quarter to take a 17-point lead into halftime.
“I think we had a slow start to the first quarter. I think once we locked in and started actually playing defense, we ended up turning the game around and we started playing the way we were supposed to play,” Holy Trinity coach Will Gibson said.
The Tigers continued to dominate in the second half with Liz Stewart making a 3-pointer late in the third to give Holy Trinity a 56-29 lead. Kylie Green also made a 3-pointer with time winding down in the quarter to further extend Holy Trinity’s lead.
Holy Trinity won its second straight region final title. Bryant finished with 27 points, Sam Fraser and Gianna Conklin-Jones both scored 11 points, Stewart added 10 points, and Green had eight points in the win for the Tigers.
After the game, Gibson highlighted how last year’s final four experience will help the team as it prepares for this year’s state semifinal.
“I think we’ll be a little bit more ready this time around. I think the girls have already had a taste of it last year. They should be a little bit more mature, a little bit more poised,” Gibson said. “So, I think we’ll be ready to go, and we got to lock in next week for the practices and we’ll be ready to go.”
Holy Trinity (19-12) will play in the Class 2A state semifinals on Friday, March 6, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Region 2-6A final: No. 2 Bayside 36, No. 1 Bloomingdale 31
Bayside won the Region 2-6A final after defeating Bloomingdale on the road. Bayside (22-8) will play in the Class 6A state semifinals on March 12 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
