As Brevard Public Schools prepares to bestow diplomas on thousands of graduates who will walk this month, among the ranks are countless seniors who excel in myriad ways and those who shine despite any and all obstacles in their way.
Whether it’s STEM or sports or simply setting out to accomplish goals and doing so, we as educators are proud of students who’ve made our time with them both a challenge and a joy rather than just a job.
Some stand out for their accomplishments across the board. While we can’t honor each one of them, here’s a profile of one young man which shows how dedicated and driven teens with a goal can be — and how the support they’ve received from family, friends and their community helps shape young people who will lead and thrive in that future.
Viera High School senior Alex Ollis has emerged as one of Brevard County’s most accomplished students, earning recognition as a top scholar through an exceptional combination of academic achievement, leadership and service to others.
Ranked first in his class, Alex maintained a 4.73 weighted GPA and a perfect 4.0 unweighted GPA, along with a 1490 SAT score. His academic resume reflects both rigor and ambition: He has completed six Advanced Placement courses with five more currently being completed this spring. He also has taken 17 dual enrollment college courses, balancing a college-level workload while still in high school. By graduation, Alex will not only receive a high school diploma from Viera High School, but also an associate of arts degree from Eastern Florida State College, a milestone that shows his commitment to maximizing educational opportunities.
Following graduation, Alex plans to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he has been accepted into a dual mechanical and aerospace engineering program. He is projected to graduate in May 2030, with aspirations to apply his skills to real-world engineering challenges.
A leader in the classroom, on the basketball court and beyond
Beyond traditional academics, Alex has distinguished himself in the field of computer science and information technology, earning multiple nationally recognized certifications. These include information technology specialist credentials in application development, as well as designation as a Python Coding Specialist.
His programming experience spans Python, Java, and web development technologies, complementing a strong foundation in mathematics and science. He has also pursued independent, self-directed projects that reflect creativity and initiative.
One such project, Cyber Launch, involved developing a multi-month cybersecurity study plan designed to prepare for competitive events while mastering foundational digital security concepts. In another endeavor, he taught himself Lua scripting and 3D modeling, ultimately creating a functional video game with original animations and mechanics.
Leadership is another cornerstone of Alex’s success. He has been a four-year member of the Viera High School boys’ basketball team, serving as team captain during the 2025–2026 district championship season. These leadership qualities have been carried into every area of his academic and personal life. His achievements have earned him numerous honors, including the Principal Scholar Award, AP Scholar with Distinction, and recognition through the College Board National Recognition Program. He has also consistently earned a place on the President’s List at Eastern Florida State College and Viera High School, further highlighting his academic consistency.
Equally important to Alex is giving back to the community. He has completed more than 150 volunteer hours, supporting organizations such as Brevard County Teen Court, local basketball camps, and The Children’s Hunger Project. Since 2022, he has also worked as a private tutor, helping fellow students improve their understanding of science, math, and SAT content by creating personalized study plans that have led to measurable score gains.
Teachers and mentors describe Alex as hardworking, dedicated, and a quick learner. These qualities have positioned him as a role model among his peers and a standout candidate on the state and national level.
As he prepares to graduate this spring, Alex represents some of the very best of Viera High School: a scholar, innovator, leader, and community contributor whose future in engineering and technology is already taking shape.
Congratulations, Class of 2026. We look forward to seeing where the future takes you.
