A Southwest Florida TV station has lost its third meteorologist in two months.
Greg Rule announced on Facebook Feb. 15 that he was leaving WINK News after six years.
Meteorologist Matt Devitt in January shared on his Facebook that WINK had fired him. The news prompted a huge outcry from Southwest Florida and beyond, as thousands commented on social media that they were upset WINK let him go.
Also in January, meteorologist Nikki Sheaks announced she was leaving WINK for Palm Beach.
Why is Greg Rule leaving WINK
Unlike Devitt, Rule’s exit will be voluntary. He said Friday, Feb. 20, will be his final day on air. Rule began at WINK in January 2020.
“It’s hard to put into words what this chapter has meant to me,” Rule said on Facebook.
“From tracking hurricanes and summer storms to celebrating beautiful Southwest Florida sunsets, it has truly been an honor to serve this community. Being welcomed into your homes each day is a responsibility I have never taken lightly.
“To our incredible viewers — thank you for your trust, your messages, your storm photos, and your support through every weather event.
“To my coworkers — thank you for the teamwork, dedication, and friendships that made the long days and breaking news moments so meaningful.”
Avid surfer, Florida native
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Rule received his bachelor’s degree in meteorology from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2011, said WINK’s website.
Prior to Southwest Florida, Rule was a meteorologist for WeatherNation and was chief meteorologist at KREX NewsChannel 5 in Grand Junction, Colorado, from 2013 to 2018.
An avid surfer, Rule is married and the couple has two boys.
‘I’m so sad!’
People began reacting to Rule’s posting early Feb. 15 with “likes,” “loves” and comments.
“I am sad!” Anne Keane commented on Rule’s posting.
“You are so very enjoyable to watch and listen to ! I hope your next chapter is rewarding and gives you the accolades you deserve !!”‘
Where is Greg Rule headed
Rule did not say what’s the next chapter in his life but there’s some clues that he’ll be working elsewhere.
“You’re the MAN!” wrote WINK colleague Josh Green, who’s also a meteorologist.
“Can’t thank you enough for being a great met and even better friend. So excited for your next step, most deserved. Can’t wait to visit.”
Many reacted on it being the second WINK meteorologist to leave in as many months. One even wrote “Wink presently” with a GIF of the Titanic splitting in two.
“Oh my! WINK meteorologists are dropping like flies! You were my second ‘go to,’ said Mary Hirschboeck Heath on Facebook. “Best of luck Greg!”
Rule ended his Facebook message by saying he soon plans to share what’s next.
“Southwest Florida will always hold a special place in my heart,” he wrote. “While this chapter is coming to a close, I’m excited for what’s ahead and hope you’ll stay connected. I’ll share more about my next steps soon.
“Thank you for allowing me to be your meteorologist. It’s been an absolute privilege.”
