Baker Mayfield’s contract situation continues to generate national discussion as training camp gets underway, with one ESPN analyst questioning why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven’t finalized an extension.
During First Take, former NFL quarterback Jordan Rodgers argued that the Buccaneers should have already committed to Mayfield after what he’s accomplished since arriving in Tampa Bay.
“It’s insane that Tampa will not invest three years, at 50 some-odd million, in a quarterback that is a franchise quarterback… especially when the guy went out and played hurt last year.”
Rodgers added that he understands why Mayfield could feel slighted by the lack of a new deal.
The comments come after it was revealed that Mayfield played through multiple injuries during the 2025 season, including sprained MCL and PCL ligaments in his knee, a severe biceps contusion, and a shoulder injury. Despite those ailments, he remained on the field and helped keep the Buccaneers in the NFC South race while once again leading the offense.
Mayfield is entering the final year of the three-year, $100 million contract he signed with Tampa Bay in 2024. Reports throughout training camp have indicated that both sides remain interested in a long-term extension, though no agreement has been reached.
For now, the Buccaneers appear content to let Mayfield focus on football while contract negotiations continue in the background. As outside opinions continue to pour in, the veteran quarterback has repeatedly maintained that his priority is helping Tampa Bay compete for another division title and a Super Bowl in 2026.
