Dolphins star free agent not expected to sign with new team right away

The Miami Dolphins have made several changes this offseason after finishing their 2025 campaign with a 7-10 record and in third place in the AFC East behind the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills.

Among those changes in recent weeks was the release of wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who had caught 340 passes for 4,733 yards and 27 touchdowns in his four years since the Dolphins acquired him in a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs.

While Hill is one of the most accomplished receivers in the league, with a Super Bowl win, five All-Pro selections and eight Pro Bowl nominations, ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes it could be a while before Hill finds a new team in free agency.

“Here’s the thing about him,” Schefter said on “Pardon My Take” on Friday. “As great as he was, I don’t think he’s close to being ready this. He’s going to miss some time to open the year. I think he starts the year out on the physically unable to perform list. When is he going to be ready? Is it the mid-way point? Is it later in the season? What’s he going to look like?

“So there’s a lot of medical questions. I think teams are going to be slow to sign him. I don’t think we’ll get a deal for Tyreek Hill until well into the offseason. That isn’t going to be one of those Day-1 (signings). First of all, he’s free right now. He could sign right now, but you’re not going to see a deal quick with him, I believe.”

Hill, who has been involved in several off-field issues throughout his career, tore his ACL in the team’s Week 4 win over the New York Jets.

Turning 32 and coming off the knee injury, Hill, who has relied on his speed and quickness throughout his career, may have to prove on a practice field that he can still do what he’s proven to be capable of.
