Fiber optic lines were intentionally cut in the Van Nuys area early on June 15, according to the cable TV, internet and phone service provider. The downed lines then caused temporary outages for residents and businesses.

Extra crews were brought in, and Spectrum said service had been restored to the Ventura area by 9 a.m. Some local residents, however, reported service interruptions throughout the day. Most customers in the Los Angeles area also had service restored by Sunday night, officials said.

Whoever cut the lines may have been looking for copper, according to the company. But Spectrum’s fiber optic lines do not include any copper, said Dennis Johnson, a senior communications director. The cut lines had been left on the ground.

Spectrum will provide a full-day credit to customers whose service was interrupted by the cut lines, officials said. The credit is expected to appear automatically on their next bill.

The company was working with the Los Angeles Police Department regarding the incident and offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest, officials said.

The company asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Spectrum at 833-404-8477.
