President Donald Trump is expected to announce new, sweeping reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday, April 2, a day he refers to as “Liberation Day.”
It comes as the president recently announced a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and some auto parts, in addition to imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum, shipments from China, and goods from Canada and Mexico, USA TODAY reported.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the new tariffs would take effect immediately, the Associated Press reported.
“For DECADES we have been ripped off and abused by every nation in the World, both friend and foe,” Trump’s Truth Social post on March 21 about Liberation Day read. “Now it is finally time for the Good Ol’ USA to get some of that MONEY, and RESPECT, BACK.”
Trump’s motive is to use tariffs as a way to force other countries to lower their tariffs on U.S. goods and services, to create a more balanced economic playing field for U.S. exports, and to create a strong incentive for companies to manufacture goods such as cars inside the U.S. to avoid paying the tax.
