San Francisco 49ers legend Jerry Rice found himself in another tournament-week confrontation at the American Century Championship, this time chasing down a heckler on the course.
A video posted to Instagram shows Rice hitting a golf swing before a spectator yells something in his direction. Rice can be seen taking off after the heckler in response. It’s unclear which round of the tournament the clip was taken during.
Rice, a longtime fixture at the celebrity golf event in South Lake Tahoe, finished the 2026 tournament with a 72 for the weekend, though he struggled in Round 3, shooting 7-over par. He placed 42nd in the 90-player field, which was won by former tennis star Mardy Fish.
The American Century Championship has become a regular offseason stop for Rice, who has competed alongside fellow 49ers legends and NFL Hall of Famers for years at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. This year’s field included Steve Young and Kyle Juszczyk representing the 49ers alongside Rice, with Young rounding out his weekend in 55th place and Juszczyk finishing 50th.
This isn’t the first time Rice has been at the center of a confrontation at the event. Two years ago, Rice was caught on camera cursing at reporters who asked him whether the Chiefs’ receiving corps was good enough to help Kansas City win another Super Bowl after the team beat the 49ers.
As for what set off the latest incident, that remains unclear. Rice has not publicly commented on the video. Regardless, the clip is the latest reminder that even at a lighthearted celebrity event, Rice’s competitive intensity travels with him well past his playing days.
