Meet the Martin Dentistry Athlete of the Week for January 12-17

The San Joaquin County has spoken: Lodi girls basketball Lillie Bayless is Martin Dentistry’s Athlete of the Week for Jan. 12-17.

In an online poll that closed Thursday, Bayless earned just under 68% of the votes with 870 ballots cast. Tracy girls soccer Olivia Sams placed second with 344 votes.

Some players grow into games. Lillie Bayless grows with them.

That adaptability has become a defining trait for the Lodi sophomore, who continues to influence games in whatever way the moment demands.

This past week, the need was scoring, and Bayless responded without hesitation, stepping into a larger offensive role while maintaining her usual energy on defense.

She set the tone Jan. 13 against Tracy, finishing with 12 points in a 53-30 win that never felt in doubt.

But the scoring only told part of the story. Bayless also collected five rebounds, handed out four assists and grabbed four steals, filling gaps across the floor.

Two nights later, she raised the bar again. Against Merrill West, Bayless poured in 22 points in a 69-35 win, delivering her most assertive offensive performance of the week.

She paired that scoring with five rebounds, three steals and two assists, showing once more that her value stretches far beyond shot attempts.

What separates Bayless is consistency. Her effort doesn’t fluctuate with the scoreboard, and her energy remains constant regardless of assignment.

That reliability has stood out to Lodi’s coaching staff. Head coach Jessica Dela Cruz pointed to Bayless’ approach as a key reason she continues to earn trust.

“I’m nominating her for her consistency in effort and energy on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor,” Dela Cruz said. “She does what the team needs of her to win.”

For a sophomore still early in her varsity career, Bayless is already showing the maturity and balance of a player comfortable adjusting on the fly — and delivering when called upon.

Here are the Jan. 12-17 nominees (Athletes listed in alphabetical order by last name):

Lillie Bayless, Girls Basketball, Lodi

Whatever the moment calls for, Lillie Bayless answers it. And she’s doing it all as a sophomore.

This week, the call was scoring, and the Lodi sophomore stepped right into the role.

Bayless set the tone Jan. 13 against Tracy, finishing with 12 points while adding five rebounds, four assists and four steals in a 53-30 win that showcased her all-around game.

Two nights later, she raised the bar, pouring in 22 points to go with five rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 69-35 win over Merrill West.

“I’m nominating her for her consistency in effort and energy on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor,” coach Jessica Dela Cruz said. “She does what the team needs of her to win.”

Jaesha Dunn, Girls Basketball, Manteca

Sometimes, one game is enough.

After averaging 6.1 points and 6.2 rebounds on the season, the Manteca senior saved her biggest statement for the perfect moment.

On Jan. 15 against Sierra, Dunn erupted for the best game of her career.

She finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds in a 50-47 win that delivered Manteca its first league victory and came within striking distance of a rare 20-20 performance.

The outburst rewrote Dunn’s personal record book. A four-year varsity player, she surpassed previous career highs of 16 points against Venture Academy on Dec. 16, 2025, and 15 rebounds against El Camino on Feb. 14, 2024.

Alaina Escobedo, Girls Soccer, Weston Ranch

Every goalkeeper’s job starts the same way — keep the door open.

Time and again, Alaina Escobedo has done just that for Weston Ranch, turning away chances and keeping matches within reach.

The scoreboard hasn’t always reflected it, but Escobedo’s work in goal has routinely put Weston Ranch in position to compete.

On Jan. 13, she stood tall with 14 saves in a 2-2 tie against Tokay, last season’s SJAA league champion. Two days later, she followed it up with eight saves in a 2-0 loss to Bear Creek, a team currently third in the league.

Escobedo now sits with 125 saves on the season, the third-highest total in the county. Weston Ranch may only have four wins, but her reliability in goal has been constant.

Yandel Gutierrez, Boys Soccer, East Union

As long as Yandel Gutierrez is on the field, his name will be in the conversation.

The East Union sophomore entered the week already leading the county with 24 goals, armed with a résumé that featured a five-goal game, two hat tricks and a goal in all but one of his 14 matches.

And somehow, he still found another level this week.

On Jan. 13, Gutierrez detonated for six goals in a 14-1 demolition of Central Catholic, turning the match into a personal showcase. He followed it up two days later with yet another hat trick in a 3-1 win over Manteca.

Nine goals later, Gutierrez stands at 33 on the season, with six games left and a postseason still to come — a frightening thought for everyone else.

Yosgar Hernandez, Boys Soccer, Venture Academy

Nobody has slowed Venture Academy in league play, and Yosgar Hernandez keeps making sure of it.

Defense may start the job, but Hernandez finishes it, turning chances into goals as efficiently as anyone around.

The junior scored twice in an 8-0 win over ALHA on Jan. 12, adding another multi-goal outing to his season.

He followed it up Jan. 14 by erupting for his fourth hat trick of the year in a 12-0 blowout of BHCPA. He’s also posted a four-goal game this season.

With 22 goals, Hernandez ranks second in the county, and the gap behind him is just as telling — the next closest players on his team sit at eight goals apiece.

Olivia Sams, Girls Soccer, Tracy

When Tracy needs an answer, Olivia Sams keeps providing it.

Whether it’s scoring, setting up teammates or steadying the group, Sams has done exactly what the county’s top team has required.

This week presented the biggest hurdle yet — Lincoln, the program with the clearest path to knocking Tracy from its perch.

Sams made sure that didn’t happen. In a 1-0 win over Lincoln on Jan. 16, she scored the lone goal, the fitting difference in the most important match of the week. Just two days earlier, she controlled a 4-0 win over Kimball, scoring twice and assisting on the other two goals.

With 12 goals and five assists on the season, Sams continues to lead the way for a Tracy team ranked among the top 25 in the state.

Carmen Walker, Girls Basketball, Franklin

If the assignment is stopping the best player, Carmen Walker takes it personally.

The Franklin guard can switch onto anyone, anywhere on the floor. After opening the season with three 10-steal games in her first four outings, Walker hasn’t slowed down. Through 19 games, she’s averaging six steals per game, and she’s dipped as low as two just once all season.

Her defense took over again this week. In a 56-38 loss to Rodriguez on Jan. 12, Walker still finished with five steals.

She followed that with six steals in a 47-40 win over Venture Academy on Jan. 14, then turned the pressure all the way up with seven steals in a 49-22 win over Chavez on Jan. 15.

Walker isn’t just a defender. In those same games, she added six points and six rebounds, then 15 points and eight rebounds, followed by 14 points and seven rebounds — the kind of complete impact that changes games on both ends.
