Local officials, artists and others celebrated the completion of what they described as one of the largest murals in the United States on June 27.
Called the Moon Ditch mural, the public art project spans around two-thirds of a mile – or 3,400 linear feet – in a flood control channel in the Ventura area. It was created through a partnership of local artists, volunteers, community organizations and county agencies, officials said.
Visible from southbound Highway 101 in Ventura, the mural features waterways, native plants and other wildlife, from tule reeds and monarch butterflies to egrets and great blue herons.
The work is part of VibeWell Ventura County, a countywide initiative that uses arts and culture to support mental health and community well being, according to organizers. More information is available at studiochannelislands.org/moon-ditch/.
