The Big Ten Conference has not been kind to the UCLA Bruins. In the team’s first two seasons in the conference, UCLA has gone just 6-12 in Big Ten action. The expectation is that will eventually change under new head coach Bob Chesney.
UCLA’s struggles in the Big Ten have only been worse when away from the Rose Bowl. Over the last two years, the Bruins have been blown out on the road by Ohio State, Indiana (twice), Penn State and USC.
The Bruins can’t blame their new conference for getting blown out by their crosstown rivals but the other four losses all came on the other side of the country. Chesney got some guidance from a fellow Los Angeles football coach on how to best prepare for travelling for big road games.
College Sports Wire writer Andrew Pistone wrote about Chesney speaking of his interaction with Los Angeles Rams head coach, Sean McVay. Chesney said that McVay advised consistency, having the Rams land at 6:00p.m. every week, regardless of the time zone they’re playing in.
Chesney’s been keeping that in mind, even thinking about how he’s feeling a day after travelling in his offseason trips across the country.
“For me I recently did it, went from California back to Virginia. I was paying close attention to what I would feel like the next day,” Chesney said at the Big Ten Media Day. “I think that one day where you have a chance to get in and settle the day before, you wake up the next day a little tired, then you go to bed a little earlier the next day, you wake up and feel a whole lot better. I got to juggle that a little bit more and figure out what the best plan is for us.”
UCLA will have some chances to get a few big wins on the road this season, having to face Maryland, Oregon, Michigan and Minnesota this year on the road in the Big Ten.
