Two people died after two cars crashed head-on near Mecca Thursday when one of the cars merged into an oncoming highway lane while attempting to overtake a slower vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred just after noon on Highway 111, south of where the highway meets Avenue 86. Highway 111 is a two-lane undivided highway in that spot.
The crash occurred after a blue Honda Civic that was traveling southbound merged into the northbound lane while attempting to overtake the slower vehicle. The Honda crashed into a blue Acura TL that was traveling northbound.
Following the collision, the Acura overturned before coming to a rest on the dirt shoulder. The Honda, meanwhile, became disabled in the middle of the roadway. The drivers of the Honda and the Accura, both of whom were men, were pronounced dead at the scene. They had yet to be identified by the coroner as of early Thursday afternoon.
A woman was who was a passenger in the Honda was transported by helicopter to Desert Regional Medical Center with what CHP said were “unknown injuries.”
