Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson were teammates for the last four years in Kansas City, patrolling the Chiefs’ secondary together since 2022. McDuffie came into the league as a first-round pick, while Watson was drafted in the seventh round, both getting selected by the Chiefs.
It appeared they were headed for a split this offseason after the Rams traded for McDuffie, but like they did with Braden Fiske and Jared Verse, the Rams are ensuring McDuffie and Watson stay together.
On the first day of free agency, the Rams agreed to a three-year deal with Watson, paying him $51 million total. McDuffie is predictably excited to remain teammates with Watson, heading west from Kansas City to sunny L.A.
Here was his reaction on X after news of Watson’s deal broke.
McDuffie and Watson each had three interceptions in their careers with the Chiefs, but the hallmark of them both is their physicality. They’re sticky in coverage and tough in run support, always willing to come up and tackle ball carriers.
It’s smart of the Rams to keep them together in Los Angeles. They know each other well and have good chemistry on the back end, which carries value when it comes to passing off receivers in coverage and communicating on the back end.
