A pedestrian died Friday, May 1, in Indio after being struck by a train there, according to Indio Police.

Officers arrived at a section of railroad tracks just north of Indio Boulevard and Clinton Street at just after 7 p.m. to find the person on the tracks with life-threatening injuries. The victim, who has not been publicly identified by the coroner, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Gabe Plata said Union Pacific Railroad personnel are investigating the crash, including how and why the victim came to be on the tracks.

Plata wrote in a press release about the incident that his department wanted to remind residents that crossing railroad tracks on foot is both extremely dangerous and illegal in most areas.

“Trains can approach quickly and quietly, making it difficult to react in time,” Plata wrote. “For your safety, always use designated crossings and nearby overpasses when traveling across train tracks.”
