A powerful thunderstorm rolled through Barstow on Tuesday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain that flooded streets and a portion of Interstate 15.
Headed in a northeasterly direction, the storm moved across Barstow, Newberry Springs, Yermo and Fort Irwin, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service issued a Flash Flood Warning until 7:15 p.m. for Newberry Springs as well as portions of I-15 and I-40. The thunderstorm was expected to produce nearly 4 inches of rain.
The storm was expected to move out of the Barstow area by 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, with cloudy skies and a 10% chance of rain on Wednesday and possibly Thursday, according to weather officials.
Kim Lombardi from the Victor Valley told the Daily Press she was visiting the area when the storm passed through. The storm caused flash flooding on roadways and washes, with one family’s car stuck in water after they decided to drive through what appeared to be a shallow area, she said.
“They got stuck as we got there and they were just walking out,” Lombardi said. “We turned around and got on the freeway, and of course the freeway was slow since the water was gushing onto the freeway too.”
Several residents said strong winds from the storm blew over trashcans, fences and outdoor furniture.
