A Shasta County employee has been accused of embezzlement in a case in which electronic components that had gone missing from county-owned devices had been sold, the sheriff’s office said Friday.
Matthew Silveira, 39, of Redding, was arrested on suspicion of felony embezzlement on Thursday after he was interviewed at the sheriff’s office Major Crimes Unit, said sheriff’s spokesman Tim Mapes. An arrest warrant had been issued for Silveira on Feb. 28 after a months-long investigation.
In October, county employees discovered inoperable electronics owned by the county that were in storage. It was determined that crucial components were missing from the devices, investigators said.
It was also discovered that an online sales account had been set up to sell the property, Mapes said in the news release.
Sheriff’s detectives identified Silveira as a county employee and the owner of the account that allegedly was selling the property, investigators said.
“A search warrant was subsequently served at Silveira’s residence, resulting in recovery of additional Shasta County property,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office did not say what type of electronics they accuse Silveira of selling. It also didn’t give Silveira’s job title with the county.
