The Los Angeles Rams’ roster features a perfect mix of veteran leaders and young stars. Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams, Nate Landman and Kam Curl are all leaders for this team, as are Kobie Turner and Kyren Williams.
They model the way for the younger players on the roster, showing them what it takes to play championship-caliber football. And with Sean McVay in charge of it all, the Rams are in excellent shape when it comes to the culture in their building.
Now in his 10th season as a head coach, McVay made a strong statement about the leadership in Los Angeles. He says there’s as much leadership from the players as he’s ever seen.
“I like the vibe of this group. I think this group has as much leadership from the players as I’ve ever been around,” he said on “Rams Camp Live” last week. “There’s a great humility and work ethic, and these guys enjoy competing. Love the way the coaches are positively pushing them. It’s a good feeling and I think the real challenge will be when we inevitably have some adversity, how do we handle it? But I do think we’re building skills in that arena to be able to handle it well.”
This is a huge compliment to players such as Stafford, Adams, Landman, Curl and others, even including newcomers such as Trent McDuffie and Myles Garrett. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote this summer that he wouldn’t be surprised if McDuffie is voted a captain in his first season with the team, just as Landman was last year.
It’s one thing for coaches to be leaders, but to have veterans who can connect with unproven players and guide them is special. Stafford has taken Ty Simpson under his wing. Adams has done the same with CJ Daniels and Konata Mumpfield. Garrett is helping Byron Young, and vice versa.
The talent Los Angeles has assembled is undeniable, but the quality of people on the roster is second to none.
