Sean McDermott opens up about his visit to Rams training camp

Recently, former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott took a trip to Los Angeles, eventually making his way to Rams training camp in an attempt to evaluate how the franchise conducts business. Taking the year off from coaching after his Bills tenure ended, McDermott is using the time away to improve as a professional, while also enjoying some of the personal privileges he’s earned after a highly successful head coaching stint.

McDermott, who became a head coach in 2017, the same year as Sean McVay, spoke to Jim Rome about his trip. McDermott joked that he enjoyed his time so much that he would’ve been willing to become an assistant, before thanking McVay for opening his doors to a former and potentially future opponent.

“I thought for a second there the visit was going so well, I’m like, ‘If he asks me to stay, I think I’ll consider it, but only if I get to stay at his house because I’m done living in the dorms at this point,'” McDermott joked. “I’ve lived that dorm life, and I’m good there, but no, it was a great visit, and when you get a chance to see someone who is really good at what they do, you can just soak it in. I was a sponge, soaking it in.

“At one point, I even went over to the other side of the field just to kind of be off on my own somewhat and just watch and take it all in. You know, he’s such a good leader, does such a great job connecting with his players, his staff, and so authentic in his nature.”

McDermott also said he visited the beach during his travels, enjoying the scenery. He also added that the last time he and McVay spoke before becoming head coaches was during the 2016 matchup between Carolina and Washington. McDermott was Carolina’s defensive coordinator, and McVay was Washington’s offensive coordinator, with them having a conversation in the elevator coming down from the coaches’ box after the game.

Carolina won that contest, 26-15. Washington was in a position to clinch a playoff berth with three weeks remaining, controlling its own destiny. That loss tanked Washington’s chances, which would result in them missing the postseason. Soon after, McVay was interviewed for the Rams’ head coaching role, and the rest is history.
