The Los Angeles Rams won’t have Matthew Stafford on the field for the start of training camp this month as the veteran quarterback deals with back soreness. Sean McVay provided an update on Stafford on Tuesday, telling reporters that the team will be cautious with him for the first five days of camp.
He will work off to the side with the Rams’ trainers in the first block of practices, giving way to Jimmy Garoppolo as the first-string quarterback in team drills. McVay doesn’t expect Stafford’s back to be a long-term issue, saying he should return to his normal workload in the second block of camp.
There are also no concerns about Stafford’s availability for the start of camp, which is good news.
According to team reporter Stu Jackson, the Rams already planned to have a “modified approach to camp” with Stafford this year due to his age. However, they did not expect him to be dealing with back soreness to open camp, which is a minor setback.
This will give Garoppolo more opportunities, as well as Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn. They are the other three quarterbacks currently on the Rams’ roster.
Stafford, 37, is entering his 17th season in the NFL and is fresh off signing a revised contract with the Rams that will pay him $44 million this year, as well as potentially $40 million more in 2026 if he plays another season in L.A.
