Arriving officers located the woman suffering from extensive injuries. She was taken in an ambulance to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to Indio police spokesperson Sgt. Abraham Plata.

Plata said an initial investigation indicates the woman, who has yet to be identified, was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene. As of Tuesday morning, officers had not located the driver or the vehicle involved in the collision.

The Indio Police Department’s Traffic Division is continuing to investigate the collision.
