Oxnard pedestrian, 64, dies after crash involving parked cars

An Oxnard man has died June 18 from injuries stemming from an Oxnard driver hitting parked vehicles almost two weeks ago, according to authorities.

On June 6 around 6:20 a.m., Oxnard Police Department officers and emergency services personnel responded to a report of a traffic crash near the intersection of Commercial Avenue and Warehouse Avenue, according to a department news release.

At the scene, officers located a pedestrian James Hays, 64, of Oxnard, with serious injuries and took him to a local hospital, the release said.

Officers found a Nissan Sentra with major damage and two parked vehicles also damaged near Hays, the release said. The driver of the Nissan, a 34-year-old man from Oxnard, remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The investigation found that the 34-year-old was driving northbound on Commercial Avenue when he allegedly crossed the southbound traffic lane and struck two vehicles parked along the west side of the road, the release said.

“The force of the crash” allegedly caused “one of the vehicles to roll back” and hit Hays, the release said.

On June 18, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office contacted the department and said Hays had died around 8:50 a.m. from injuries caused by the June 6 crash, the release said.

Anyone with information on the incident should call Officer Joseph Clarke at 805-385-7750 or joseph.clarke@oxnardpd.org.
