The Los Angeles Rams have a trio of running backs this year — and all could see action.
Kyren Williams remains the starter after consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, but backups Blake Corum and Jarquez Hunter also offer intriguing elements. Corum is a short-yardage runner with good size, while Hunter is an explosive home run hitter. Williams shouldn’t lose too many snaps to both, but it’s unclear how long or short his leash will be considering his known fumbling issues.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer finds the Rams’ running back room fascinating. And he noted in his weekly mailbag that it’s one of the positional battles he’s excited to watch this summer.
“This seems like a funny one since Kyren Williams is coming off a year in which he was seventh in the NFL with 1,299 rushing yards, and tied for fifth with 14 touchdowns on the ground,” Breer wrote. “Sean McVay said Tuesday the team is trying to get him extended. But what if that doesn’t happen? Blake Corum’s going into his second year, and rookie Jarquez Hunter is looming as an option. Which could bring some intrigue to training camp.”
The Rams could land a few different ways with this group. The status quo could remain with Williams as the bellcow and a combination of Corum or Hunter spelling him in situational plays. Or, Williams could see his snap share drop as McVay looks to diversify the playbook and give defenses more to consider on a week-to-week basis.
Now, at least, McVay has options.
