Mother's Day weekend earthquake jolts High Desert, San Bernardino area

A series of earthquakes, including a magnitude 3.4 quake near San Bernardino and the San Andreas Fault, jolted homes and set off car alarms in the High Desert and the Inland Empire on Mother’s Day weekend. 

The quake occurred at 11:32 p.m. on Friday, May 8, and was centered 1 mile southeast of Muscoy, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake was reported just west of 15 Freeway and 215 Freeway interchange, and south of the San Andreas Fault. 

According to social media, the quake was felt in portions of San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

“I was working in my office when it felt like a car bumped into my house,” Billy Carr of Hesperia told the Daily Press. “The walls and windows of my house rattled, and my dogs started barking.”

“It was quite a jolt,” said Melissa Smith of Apple Valley, who was brushing her teeth when she felt the earthquake. “It was quick and powerful.”

Friday night’s earthquake was the third of the day.

Two magnitude 3.4 quakes occurred 4 mi south-southwest of Redlands, with one at 6:40 p.m. and another earlier at 5:53 a.m. 

Other May earthquakes

At 9:37 a.m. on May 7, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred 22 mi southwest of Fort Irwin.

At 9: 45 a.m. on May 6, a magnitude 3.3 quake occurred 4 miles south-southwest of Redlands.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services encourages individuals, families and businesses up and down the Golden State to prepare for the next big one.
