Matthew Stafford isn’t playing in the preseason but Saturday was still a very important day for the Los Angeles Rams quarterback. He had an on-field workout at the team’s facility as he inches closer to returning to practice, continuing to progress from a lingering back injury that’s sidelined him since the start of camp.
Sean McVay said on Thursday that if all went well in Stafford’s workout, the quarterback would be on track to practice with the team on Monday. McVay joined the Rams’ broadcast during Saturday’s preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys and provided an update, sharing some really positive thoughts on Stafford’s performance.
He said Stafford “looked awesome” and took a “very good step in the right direction. Here’s more of what McVay said about Stafford, via Adam Grosbard of the LA Daily News.
Considering how well the workout went, we should expect Stafford to be on the field again Monday when the team returns to practice. That will be his first practice since minicamp in June, so this will be an important step for the veteran quarterback.
He’s been dealing with some back soreness that stemmed from an aggravated disc, which he got an epidural for to help manage the pain. The Rams have no concerns about his Week 1 availability and McVay even said on Thursday that if there were a regular-season game this weekend, Stafford would be able to play.
