Authorities are investigating as a homicide the death of a man found partially submerged in the Santa Clara River in the Fillmore area April 2.
Deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office were called on a report of body in the river, just south of the A Street bridge, around 1:40 p.m., according to a sheriff’s office news release.
The body was found entangled in foliage, partly under water and in the center of the swift-moving river, sheriff’s officials said. Deputies called the Ventura County Fire Department, which helped retrieve the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was identified by the sheriff’s office as Eduardo Castro, 43, of Fillmore, and described as homeless. He suffered suspicious injuries and may have been the victim of an assault, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Fillmore Police Department and sheriff’s major crimes bureau are investigating Castro’s death as a homicide.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. Bill Meixner at 805-384-4727.
