Man arrested in Mexico for Oxnard homicide
A 41-year-old man was arrested in Mexico as a suspect of a homicide in Oxnard from February 2025, according to authorities.
On Feb. 16, 2025, an Oxnard man was found about 4:30 a.m. with apparent gunshot wounds to the head at the intersection of H and Second streets, the Oxnard Police Department said in a news release. The location is several blocks west of the city’s main public library in the downtown area, at the corner of the future Campus Park.
Police said they began life-saving measures and emergency medical crews responded and treated the victim, but that he succumbed to his injuries.
The victim was identified by police as Oxnard resident Ruben Villa, 39, of Oxnard. The city of Oxnard offered a reward of $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any individuals responsible for committing homicides within the city.
On Feb. 19 around 10:30 p.m., Alvaro Cervantes was arrested by detectives from Oxnard police and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office with help from the FBI at the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro, according to another department news release.
Mexican law enforcement found and arrested Cervantes in Tijuana, Mexico Feb. 18 with the assistance of the FBI, the release says.
The Oxnard man is being held at Ventura County jail with a bail set at $2 million, jail records show. His felony offenses are listed as first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a crime. He has a Ventura County Superior Court hearing scheduled for Feb. 23.

Oxnard woman stabbed in apartment complex parking area
A woman from Oxnard was stabbed early morning on Feb. 21, stemming from being a bystander of a fight in an Oxnard apartment complex parking area, according to authorities.
Around 2 a.m., officers responded to a fight that resulted in an injury at the apartment complex parking area at the 500 block of West Vineyard Avenue, said Cmdr. Greg Harasymowycz.
A 34-year-old Oxnard woman, who was a bystander of a fight, was stabbed in the arm and needed to be taken to a local hospital, the commander said.
The woman suffered minor injuries and the investigation is ongoing, Harasymowycz said.
