One of the most important things for a quarterback in the NFL is a reliable weapon. Last season, there was no clear-cut go-to guy for former Trojan quarterback Caleb Williams. D.J. Moore was supposed to be the #1 guy, but he and Caleb Williams just were never on the same page. They just traded him to Buffalo this offseason, now it is up to the young guys to step up and be that guy.
The D.J. Moore experiment may have fallen flat with Caleb, and did not reach the level of what Justin Fields and Moore were able to create for a season. Luther Burden and Caleb can be exactly what that duo was meant to be. Burden and Moore are very similar in their game, and many anticipated the departure of Moore after Burden was drafted.
Luther Burden is an in-house playmaker, and anytime he gets the ball in his hands, you know he will get yards after the catch. Last season, as a rookie, he posted 53 catches, 718 yards, and 2 touchdowns. His performance late in the season vs the 49ers gave a huge hope for his future. Vs the 49ers, he had 8 catches for 138 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Caleb will have success whenever he gets the ball into Burden’s hands. With Burden entering year 2 with more confidence and more trust, I expect him to be an elite weapon for Caleb this season. Would not surprise me if he eclipses 1k yards receiving this year.
D.J. Moore and Caleb created some magical moments this past season, but the Caleb Williams to Luther Burden connection will take it a step further and create long-term success together. The duo could become one of the more dangerous connections in the NFL.
