Looking to develop young roster, Firebirds re-sign veteran mentor Gustav Olofsson

The uncertainty of the Coachella Valley Firebirds’ blue line dissipated at least a little bit on Tuesday.

Veteran Gustav Olofsson finalized a contract extension to remain with the organization for two more years, meaning that the defensive assistant captain will again be a leading presence with the Firebirds. Olofsson played for Coachella Valley each of their first three seasons in the American Hockey League.

The deal is an AHL contract, which will keep the 30-year-old from Boras, Sweden in the valley through the 2026-27 season.

“We are pleased to bring Gustav back on a two-year contract,” said Troy Bodie, the Firebirds’ vice president of hockey operations. “Gustav is a hard-working player and a leader in our locker room. He has engrained himself in the community and we are happy to have him on our backend.”

Olofsson was previously signed to an NHL contract with the Seattle Kraken, the Firebirds’ NHL affiliate. He has appeared in 122 regular season games with the Firebirds and recorded 35 points (five goals, 30 assists). He also has skated in an additional 50 postseason contests.

Olofsson has been a Firebirds assistant captain each of the last three years.

Olofsson’s re-signing is especially big for a team that is looking to solidify its blue line for the 2025-26 season. The Firebirds are coming off a season in which they allowed the most goals (205) in a regular season since joining the AHL, in 2022. Part of that was due to a younger roster, injuries and several players being called up for stints with the Kraken.

Defenseman Nikolas Brouillard signed this offseason with the San Diego Gulls, and free agent blueliner Max Lajoie remains unsigned.

Olofsson, who has played in 63 NHL games, suiting up for the Seattle Kraken, Montreal Canadiens, and Minnesota Wild, will be an important mentor for several young Firebirds this season, particularly those playing on the blue line. Rookies Caden Price, a Saskatchewan native who compares favorably to former Firebird Ryker Evans, and supremely skilled British Columbia native Lukas Dragicevic, are among them.

With Olofsson returning, he joins those two rookies, second-year defenseman Ty Nelson and young veterans Cale Fleury and Ville Ottavainen among the blueliners under contract for the 2025-26 season.
