Kyren Williams' improved explosiveness has 'stood out' to Rams RBs coach

Kyren Williams has been one of the most productive running backs in the NFL for the last two years, but there’s still something missing from his game. He doesn’t create many big plays, with only six of his 315 carries last season going for at least 15 yards.

While there’s no denying that he has a nose for the end zone and consistently moves the chains in short-yardage situations, he’s by no means a home run hitter. The Los Angeles Rams are aware of this, hence the selection of speedy running back Jarquez Hunter in the draft, but improvements could be on the way.

Rams running backs coach Ron Gould has noticed an increase in explosiveness from Williams this offseason after the fourth-year back showed up in “exceptional shape” this spring.

“The first thing that stood out to us was his explosiveness,” Gould told Wyatt Miller of TheRams.com. “… One of the things (I noticed) was just his ability to stay grounded through some of his runs that was really, really evident in the work that he’s put in, so really, really pleased with that.”

Williams has every reason to be motivated entering this pivotal year in Los Angeles, which is the final year of his rookie contract. His agent and the Rams have been discussing a potential extension for months and though no deal has been agreed to yet, it’s possible something will get done before the start of the season.

If Williams doesn’t sign an extension and plays out the season on his current contract, it’ll give him even more motivation to perform at a high level and earn a lucrative new deal next offseason – either from the Rams or another team in free agency.

It’ll be difficult for a running back with 4.65 speed to make significant strides in the explosive-play department but it’s good to see him attempting to improve his big-play potential.
